Magento is ready for iphone, not only by the use of an autodecting template, a mobile version will be used whenever a smartphone is accessing your Magento store and now also with the launch of Magento Mobile.

Magento mobile is a new product that will allow Magento merchants to easily create branded, native storefront applications that are deeply integrated with Magento’s market-leading eCommerce platform.  The product includes a new administrative manager, a native iPhone app that is fully customizable (colors, images, buttons, etc), and a service where Magento manages the submission and maintenance process for the iTunes App Store.

Varien, the company that owns Magento, formerly worked with osCommerce, touting themselves as the US leaders in osCommerce. They originally planned to fork osCommerce but later decided to rewrite it as Magento.
Magento officially started development in early 2007[4] Seven months later on August 31, 2007, the first public beta version was released.
The German magazine t3n featured Magento in the December 2007 edition.[5]
In March 2008, Magento was selected to present at the Under the Radar: The Business of Web Apps conference[6], where it won the audience favorite.[7]
Magento 1.0 was released on March 31, 2008.
