The Joomla! 1.0 life comes to an end. Joomla! existed since August 2005 but is itself derived from Mambo 4.5.2 which in the original version 4.5 was finished in 2003.

Joomla! 1.5 is released early in 2008, now 14 versions and 7 million downloads later, we can speak of a general acceptance of this new version, which is also reflected in the availability of numerous native Joomla! 1.5 extensions. The extensions for Joomla! 1.0 are no longer available on http://extensions.joomla.org.

There is no more reason not to upgrade, especially if you know that on July 22, 2009 the official support of Joomla! 1.0 stops. So, be aware, no more security patches.

What does this mean for your existing Joomla! 1.0 site?

An upgrade starts with a fresh install of Joomla! 1.5, based on the migrator script we can transfer most information from the old website.

Extensions for Joomla! 1.5 are completely different so the old extensions need to be replaced with new ones. For most extensions this is absolutely no problem, for custom extensions the work needs to be redone.
There is currently only one reason not to upgrade: you work with a very important extension for which no Joomla! 1.5 version exists. Even then I woud recommend to upgrade and look at the extensions with similar functionalities. An extension without upgrade is no longer supported.
